A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE MIND OF CHARLES SWAN 3: Roman Coppola is a bit of an oddity. He helped write the beautiful MOONRISE KINGDOM but when it comes to the films he directs, he tends to focus on style and gimmicks with cretins as characters. This was apparent in CQ (which looked great but made little sense) and its even more apparent here. The movie never really makes a point to say it, but this takes place in a stylized 1970s Los Angeles. Charles Swan is a graphic artist of some note. As played by Charlie Sheen, he is also a hound dog player who treats women like playthings. For all intents and purposes, not much of a leap from his character on TWO AND A HALF MEN or, his own persona. The movie wants you to sympathize with him, as he is pining a lost love. (she left because he cheated on her) But Swan is an egomaniac; selfish and not very likable. Nor does he change much. The stylistic flourishes are interesting, but not involving. The fantasy sequences, even with folks like Bill Murray in the cast, fall flat and the women characters are cardboard sketches. An interesting movie, but not a good one. youtube/watch?v=OWijct7LzAE
