A GROUP REPRESENTING CO-OPERATIVES IS CALLING FOR REGULATION THAT BETTER SERVES THE UNIQUE BUSINESS MODEL OF MEMBER-OWNED ENTERPRISES. The Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals has published a report into the economic value of the businesses in the Australian economy, finding the top 100 CO-OPERATIVES TURN OVER $25 BILLION A YEAR. The groups chair, Andrew Crane, the CEO of the WA grain co-operative CBH Group, says co-operatives and member-owned businesses are an under-recognised sector of the nations economy. Weve become a bit of a forgotten sector, Dr Crane said. We fall into a crack between the terms profit and not-for-profit. We are not profit-making entities for external shareholders, but equally we are not not-for-profit organisations. We do make surpluses, but they are only to be employed for the benefit of our members, those who own the business and who its been created for. mobile.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-18/nrn-co-op-report/5900188
