A Gift by Karin Taylor A sky of periwinkle blue peaked over my sunburnt shoulder, sea shells crunched under foot. Smell of salty sea, aroma of fish and chips, mouthwatering, glistening day. Ocean spray salts my hair, parting it into dry blonde strips of straw. Sunshine drips its honeyed goodness from above and nourishes my skin with D. The surf is invigorating today, refreshingly cool, each dip is like a baptism in lemonade. The gulls are gliding above me, dolphins below. Little fish dart in and out about me, baby stingrays sprint away from my feet, causing little clouds of sand to erupt, like miniature volcanos on the sea-bed. I am charmed by the heady beauty of the sun glinting on the waters surface. It glitters like treasure and I imagine for just a moment what it might be like if one could harvest those gorgeous diamonds and sapphires. I float in the aquamarine paradise, cooling my head, soaking the atmosphere of a perfect day. Every so often, I catch a snippet of gentle conversation between friends whove come to visit the seaside and find it comforting. I listen in on their conversations, small talk is soothing. It adds ambiance. Meaningless chatter is sometimes a welcome distraction from matters the mind seems so constantly perplexed by. Two little children squeal, as bubbling frothy waves rush cheekily at their sandcastle. Theres a wee crab with a cute face filtering sand for his daily bread. He throws little round pearls of sand over his head, in an almost comical way. A little bee slowly crawls along, he seems waterlogged poor thing. Sadly I see a dead bird, a reminder that everything isnt always giving, but sometimes there are taking away times, times when we lose things, people we love, hopes we had, dreams wed dreamed. It makes the day all the more wonderful. A gift.
