A God of Constants 2 Kings 2:8 & 14 Most of us grew up with the story of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea with Moses on dry ground when God led them out of Egypt and, 40 years later, when Joshua crossed the Jordan River with the Israelites, again on dry ground, to enter Canaan. These two miraculous events were among the reasons Israel was so feared and respected by the nations when they began to claim the promised land; however, these two well-known incidences weren’t the only time God parted bodies of water for His people. In the eighth chapter of 2 Kings we find that the Jordan River was parted two other times, once for Elijah, “Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground!” 2 Kings 2:8 (NLT) and again for Elisha, “He struck the water with the cloak and cried out, ‘Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?’ Then the river divided, and Elisha went across” 2 Kings 2:14 (NLT). The more I read the Bible, the more I am struck by the consistencies of God. He is a God Who repeats His message of salvation and grace throughout the pages of the Bible: He saved Noah and his family from the Flood, He saved the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He saved them again from captivity in Babylon, and, today, He wants to save you from the bondage of sin. He is indeed “the same yesterday, today, and forever” Hebrews 13:8 (NLT). God’s message might be crafted differently for each generation, but the message remains the same: Follow Me and live. ~Randy & Trena Reed (via Walking through The Word)
