A Godly Government "For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it." Proverbs 2:21-22 After decades of service to his country in both war and peace, George Washington completed his second term as president. In his Farewell Address to the nation he wrote: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labour to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.” America was never a Christian nation in the sense that everyone was a believer, but there is no question that strong Christian principles guided the foundations of our government. As we see that changing before our eyes—as the government begins to punish good and promote evil—it is more important than ever that we do what we can to influence the shape of our society. While we have the right and the duty to be involved in the government as citizens, the ultimate solution to these problems can only be found in the spiritual arena. Paul, who understood what it was like to live under a government that was in direct opposition to God, urged Timothy to pray and make supplication, “For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty” (1 Timothy 2:2). We must be faithful in praying for our leaders at all levels of government. In addition, we must be diligent about sharing the gospel with others. The actions of men are never ultimately the result of law but of heart. As Christ rules in the hearts of His children, their actions and our nation will change for the better. Today’s Proverbs Precept: Be faithful to pray for our leaders and our nation so we can live in righteousness and safety.
