A Government House follower recently visited the restored grave of Queenslands first Governor, Sir George Ferguson Bowen, buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London. Bowen arrived in Queensland on 10 December 1859, and remained Governor until 1868. After governorships in New Zealand and Victoria, among other places, Bowen returned to England where he died of bronchitis in 1899. There are many towns, places of significance and streets named after Governor Bowen and his wife, Lady Diamantina, including the north Queensland town of Bowen, the Brisbane suburb of Bowen Hills, and the Diamantina River in western Queensland.
