A Great Tausug : Dr. ABDULMARI ASIA IMAO Sr. National Artist for Sculpture. (January 14, 1936 - December 16, 2014) Sulu mourns the demise of a Tausug artist, who is best immortalized by the stained glass murals he created in the late sixties and still adorns the stairways of the Provincial Capitol (see photo). Artist live in a world of their own, insulated and unaffected by what ordinary mortals have to go through daily, politics, love and other imperfections of life. But artists are repositories of conscience and they communicate with the rest of mankind by their crafts and other mediums which induce the beholder to dig deep into himself for meanings that he never knew existed in himself. Even the position Imao chose for his stained glass Sarimanok mural speak well of his deep intuition as an artist. The mural cradles the morning sun and filter it to a bright montage of colors and figures depicting symbols of Tausug culture and history. Imao could not have chosen a vantage canvass for his glasswork than working the sun to remind the Tausug of their glorious past, their rich culture, their civilization and that hope still remains bright for them to maintain and regain their pride, honor and dignity. Thank you and goodbye Abdulmari, Sulu will always remember you.
