A HEAVY RAINFALL WATCH/ ROUGH SEAS WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR ST. MAARTEN FROM TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAYHEAVY RAINFALL A Heavy Rainfall Watch is in effect from Tonight through Sunday for St. Maarten. Heavy showers leading to localized flooding are likely over sections of the island, due to the passage of Tropical Storm (TS) Bertha to the Southwest of the local area. At 02:00 pm, the center of TS Bertha was estimated near 14.5 N, 60.3 W or about 45 miles East of Martinique with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour. Bertha is moving toward the West-Northwest near 22 miles per hour and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. On its forecasted track, Bertha is expected to pass near Martinique during the next several hours and move into the northeastern Caribbean Sea tonight and approach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Saturday. Residents are urged to avoid driving on flooded streets until the heavy rain has tapered off or ended and the flood waters have subsided. In case there are lightning strikes very close to your location (loud thunder, less than three seconds between lightning discharge and thunder), switch off and disconnect any sensitive electronic equipment. Also disconnect any phone line from your computer. Sea conditions will deteriorate quickly Tonight into Saturday with the passage of TS Bertha. Seas are currently 4 to 6 feet, reaching 5 to 8 feet by tonight and peaking at 9 feet. All small craft operators are advised to remain in port and persons with interests along the coast should secure their properties. Updates will be issued when necessary.
