A HISTORIC BLOCK INDEED As many of you are seeing each day the resurgence of Ringgolds historic first block, these photos can help you realize that a huge electronic multimedia billboard does not belong here. This was the block General Longstreet, General Cleburne and General Ulysses Grant walked and rode through during the great war. This was where many still living remember seeing their first movie, or their family buying their cars, or going to the drug store. It is now being reclaimed to be the crown jewel of our little town. The renovation of the old Ringgold Telephone/Price Ringgold Drug building, along with the painting of the adjacent buildings (and new awnings) is remarkable, not to mention the pedestrian-friendly walkway that will soon link to the new pedestrian bridge at the Old Depot. Considering the aesthetics issue alone is enough to justify moving the sign. When you throw in the lowering of property value and the hazard to drivers and pedestrians by the distraction of a huge bright flashing sign, that should seal the deal. However, there are powerful folks who want the sign to promote the events at the Depot. Question: Where is the sign promoting the events at our countys premiere civic center, the Colonnade? Answer: Its out on Battlefield Parkway, of course, where the largest traffic counts can see it. A promotional sign need not be within eyesight of the place it is promoting, especially if the place is a 165 year old civic treasure. Please note the city council meeting to consider the request of many to move the sign from the historic block has been rescheduled to January 12 at 6:45 p.m. Please mark this on your calendar and anytime you get a chance to let your city government know of your opinion, let them know it!
