A HS journalist wrote an article in todays paper lamenting the lack of trout in our rivers, and blamed it on Greenie councils ripping out all the willow trees. For over 40 years I and family members have been making the trek to central Victoria, and crossing over the Campaspe River in many places. The Campaspe has gone from a beautiful shaded place where you would have to stop along the way for a rest to eat lunch and dip your toes in, into a bedraggled looking dirty creek surrounded by motley looking native trees. The willows were planted in our rivers to hold the banks together, and they provided shade to cool the water, lessen evaporation, and provided a habitat to many creatures and insects that fed the fish. The State Government is now spending 30 grand looking into the troubles besetting our rivers. Yes, I know the willows arent native, and suck a lot of water, but a lot more water has disappeared since theyve been gone.
