A HUGE happy birthday to one of my favourite people on this fine planet, Roy Oommen! Over the 30+ years (yikes) that weve known each other, Roy has always been a source of encouragement to me. When we were teenagers, he encouraged me to start singing publicly. He then strongly urged me to play the tambourine, which turned in to a shaker, a cymbal, and finally a set a conga drums to add to the collection....yes, the Sheila E in our band. Finally, he forced (yes FORCED) me to start leading our church in worship…..even though I was physically ill almost every time before stepping out on stage. He took the time (sometimes MUCH time needed) to educate me about song choices, themes, keys, flow, and he worked with me to increase my range so the congregation could sing in a comfortable key and not “alto worship” which was my comfort zone. However, the most important tools that I learned from this mentor of mine were things unseen – the issues of the heart. He taught me how to prepare for a service, before any songs were chosen, how I needed to find Him and seek Him to know where He wanted to lead – not my will, but Yours be done. And the final lesson learned was the lesson of LOVE. Not only to love God our maker, but to love the people you’re leading, and to lead in love….both the team your leading with AND the congregation. Roy is not only a gifted (a wee genius, really) in the area of music, but in the ways he leads people through love and always by example. He continues to be lead many, and propel them to higher levels and be all that God wants them to be. God has blessed him with Kari, a beautiful (inside and out) helpmate to run beside him , as well as 3 little gorgeous girls, who already know what it means to “soak” in His Presence – priceless! A true leader in every way it counts – publicly and privately. Today I honour you, Roy, for not only blessing me with your gifts, but with your friendship. We might not talk every day….or even every 6 months sometimes, but I know you’re always in my corner and one of my biggest fans cheering me on - thank you! I love you, friend. Have a blessed day!
