A Howard County man took his own life some time Friday afternoon after a standoff with law enforcement that began shortly before midnight Friday morning. The man and his wife’s names are being withheld at this time. The incident began at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday evening when the man’s wife called 911 and reported a “domestic” issue, according to Sheriff Mike Neal. When Howard County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence at 299 County Road 342, the wife was able to leave the house, but the husband remained inside. He refused to leave and threatened to harm himself with a gun he had in his possession. Since about midnight, Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal, county deputies, Missouri State Highway Patrol officers, New Franklin Police officers, and a Boonville police detective were at the scene. A witness reported seeing “at least 20 law enforcement cars” along County Road 342 and at the 299 County Road 342 residence. Through-traffic was blocked on County Road 342 during the duration of the standoff.
