A Hull Hoppers Foreign Jaunts #No 4 F.C. Zwolle 1 – 3 NEC Oosterenk Stadion, Zwolle, Netherlands, 27 November 1992, KNVB Eerste Divisie. SVV / Dordrecht ‘90 0 – 4 F.C. Volendam Krommedijk, Dordrecht, Netherlands, 28 November 1992, KNVB Ere Divisie. Feyenoord 3 – 4 MVV Feyenoord Stadion, Rotterdam, Netherlands, 29 November 1992, KNVB Ere Divisie. It seemed we were becoming regular travellers on the North Sea Ferries from Hull to Holland and the trip we took to Europort in late November 1992 was once again a wonderful experience, with the food, bars and entertainment on board being as good as ever. The staff on board were even getting used to us travelling, with some of the waiters asking which games we were going to see this time. The familiar short coach journey from Europort to Rotterdam Railway Station was undertaken and after checking in to the hotel we caught a train to the north eastern Dutch town of Zwolle for the Friday evening fixture between F.C. Zwolle and NEC in the second tier of the Dutch league. We arrived early, so it enabled us to have a look round what is a pleasant, small town with some very nice buildings. The ground too was small, but very smart and modern looking and the club officials at the Oosterenk Stadion were very helpful, providing us with programmes, team sheets and refreshments. The game itself was a very entertaining affair in front of a small but very lively crowd, with the usual Dutch brass band playing a loud medley of tunes. A very good NEC side took control of the game and ran out worthy 3 – 1 winners against a Zwolle side containing a young Japp Stam, in what was a very good advert for Dutch second tier football. A return to Rotterdam for the night meant that we could have a good look around the city on the Saturday, which proved to be a very interesting place. After lunch, we made the short journey to Dordrecht for that evening’s game between SVV / Dordrecht ’90, a newly merged team, and F.C. Volendam in the Dutch Ere Divisie, the top division. Once again the game proved to be a lively fixture and the small crowd still made a loud noise, with fire crackers going off at regular intervals, and the linesman did extremely well to avoid a few of the stray ones! SVV / Dordrecht ’90 were, however, completely outclassed by a decent F.C. Volendam team who deservedly won 4 – 0. The Krommedijk ground was a very nice venue with a combination of old and new stands at either side of the ground making it an ideal place to play football. The final game of the weekend, and potentially the best, was to take place on a damp Sunday afternoon at the famous ‘De Kuip’ ground, officially known as the Feyenoord Stadion. Making our way through the metal detectors, the friendly stewards guided us to our entrance and we made our way to the seats in what was easily the biggest ground of the weekend. The ground was a little past its best and showing signs of wear but was, in my opinion, a classic venue and one which was near the top of my list to visit. The ground wasn’t the only classic, as the game between Feyenoord and MVV turned out to be a really entertaining ding – dong battle between two very good teams, with the lead changing hands a number of times. The Feyenoord team contained a number of famous names including, De Goey, Metgod, De Wolf and Rob Witschge. A 3 – 2 half time lead for Feyenoord proved to be not enough as MVV ran in two more second half goals to complete a very good 4 – 3 victory to end what was another brilliant footballing weekend. The usual short journey to the North Sea Ferry terminal once again whetted the appetite for more overseas football trips.
