A Journalist-cum-agnostic was on her way home when she decided to take a shortcut, an unlit steep path leading to her familys apartment. But she was hardly half-way thru when a rapist reached out from the dark and grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground. Gripped with fear, the lady fought back like a wounded lion. Together she and her assailant struggled for more than ten minutes before the rapist finally succeeded in overpowering her by pinning her body to the ground with his knees. But just at the moment she thought the man had his way, he suddenly got up and, for no apparent reason, walked away into the dark night. That was a big surprise. As far as she could remember,, notin like that had happened in living memory. Unknown to her, a bigger surprise awaited her back home. On getting home, she discovered that her mother was sleeping. So she quickly remove her clothes which had been torn in several places, had a quick bath and put on something casual. But she was surprised when her mother woke up abt an hour later and asked whether she had been in any danger about one hour and fifteen minutes ago. Yes, the lady replied but wanted to know how she knew. Her mother, a born again Christian, told her how, upon waking up from a deep sleep, she had been seized with fear that something terrible was about to happen to her daughter. She immediately knelt down beside her bed and, for 15minutes, prayed and begged God to protect her daughter from the nameless danger she felt her daughter faced. Convinced that God had answerd, she went back to sleep. Highly impressed, the agnostic daughter told her mother the story of the attempted rape. Needless to say, the Journalist who had all along seen religion and belief in God as the worst form of irrationality, had cause to do some serious rethink, after this experience. THE MYSTERY OF PRAYER, Newsweek edition of March 31, 1997. God answers prayer of faith, most importantly from a righteous heart. God help us.
