A Kashmiri truck conductor, who got killed in Thursday’s Fidayeen attack at Hiranagar, Jammu was scheduled to tie the nuptial knot next month. 27-year-old Feroz Ahmad, son of late Bashir Ahmad Ahanger of Khonmoh, the youngest among three siblings, including a mentally challenged sister was preparing for his marriage with enthusiasm. “He was engaged to a girl from Zawoora village of Khonmoh and was scheduled to get married next month. However, destiny had something else in store for him,” Tariq Ahmad, a neighbour told Kashmir Reader Friday. “He was working hard to support his family and took care of his ailing sister. He was a humble person and won appreciation in the village for his humility. He death has left everyone in shock,” he added. Feroz, he said, left for New Delhi along with his cousin Arif early this week with a truckload of Kashmiri fruits. On their return, he said, the police seized their truck near Hiranagar.. “We had never imagined that the would-be- groom would meet such a cruel fate. His death has shattered his family,” Tariq added. A pal of gloom descended on the village Friday morning when his body arrived. Amid total shutdown, hundreds of men, women and children from Khonmoh and adjoining areas took to streets and mourned his death. While some women beat their chests, many showered flower petals and rose water on his funeral procession that passed through different localities before reaching Eidgah, Khonmoh where his Nimaz-e- Jinazah (funeral prayers) was offered. Amid sobs and tears, he was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard at Takiya Mohalla, even as the locals had dug a grave for him at the Martyrs Graveyard. Besides Feroz, four soldiers, including a Lieutenant Colonel, and as many policemen were killed in two swift attacks in the Jammu region by suspected militants, before they were shot dead in an operation that lasted several hours. .
