A King Lives among His People The story is told of a long-ago king who wanted to live among his people as an ordinary man. So he traded his crown and kingly robes for the clothing of a peasant and walked through the villages and countryside in disguise. One day he stopped at the door of a poor peasant’s cottage and said to the good woman who answered his call, “I’m looking for food and lodging. Have you any work that I could do?” Not knowing he was the king, she pointed to a distant field and replied, “Go ask my husband. He might be able to use you.” Her husband hired the wandering stranger, and so the king became the servant of peasants and lived among his people. One day, the king saw a troop of soldiers passing through the village; they were leading a peasant boy in chains and treating him roughly. The king stepped forward and demanded, “What has this boy done, and where are you taking him?” “What do you care what he’s done?” the soldiers replied gruffly, not recognizing their king. “He’s a thief—caught in the act of stealing grapes from the king’s vineyard. And we are taking him to prison, where he belongs.” The king looked upon the poor boy with merciful eyes and declared, “I grant him full pardon and command you to release him at once.” The soldiers laughed in disdain. “Who are you to command us so? Only the king can grant pardon for this crime.” And they began to push the king aside. But the king replied with authority, “I am your king.” The confused soldiers looked with doubt upon this ragged man before them. “You—our king? Hah! You couldn’t be a king. You certainly don’t look like one. You’re nothing but a peasant.” Then the king reached into his shirt and pulled out a gold ring, the signet of the royal family and with it proved his royalty. Immediately the soldiers bowed and apologized for their mistake. The peasants who had gathered were shocked and amazed. “We didn’t know you were our king! You have been living here in our midst, and we never knew who you were.” He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. JOHN 1:10
