A LEAF FROM MY LIFE – XXVIII (Mass Loaning functions) In 1975, the first mass loaning function for financing to ‘Rehriwals’, was organised by me in the branch premises and the same was presided over by the Bank Director,Dr. A.S.Kalon. This function was the first of it kind in Chandigarh. In 1976, Seeing impact of the first function Amar, the R.M. and K.G.Sapra the Z.M. wanted me that I should organise a grand mass loaning function in which T.R.Tuli, the chairman and other senior officials of the bank be called from H. O. and it be got presided over by T.N. Chatruvedi, the Chief Commissioner of the U.T. This was not a small job but was not impossible as I had a dedicated team and the authorities assured me of all help. I thought of the Sweeper Colony in Sector-25 to give loan to the Harijans and Depressed Classes particularly to the Sweeper’s families to supplement their income. I contacted Amolak Singh the Manager of the Singer Sewing machine and he readily agreed to offer Sewing machines at concession rates after taking permission from the Company on telephone. It was a very a grand function. This type of function was a new in Chandigarh. Chairman T.R.Tuli came to preside over the function and T.N.Chartarvdi, the Chief Commissioner (later Home Secretary Government of India) was the Chief Guest. National and Regional media gave full coverage to this function. Besides the Chairman, Mathuria, the chief of the priority Sector also came. Almost all the News papers gave good coverage to the function. In 1978 Morar ji Desai, the Prime Minister was to come Chandigarh. All the banks decided to organise the Mass Loaning function at village Dadu Majara which was in my command area and I already had financing in this village and was having good deposits also. It was natural, the authorities expected me to take lead to finance on behalf of our Bank. Moreover, our Bank was the Lead Bank of Chandigarh and much was expected from our Bank. The R. O. gave the maximum support by providing me the Agriculture officer for processing the cases. The function was a great success more so when it was to be presided over by the Prime Minister. My role was upto the field only and in higher show were Senior Executive of the different Banks and local bureaucracy. Again in 1979 one more mass loaning function at village Khuda Lahora was organised for Dairy Farming by the branch. This function too was presided over by the Bank’s Chairman O.P.Gupta and the Chief Guest was Malick, the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh. The National and Regional New Paper gave a good coverage to this function also. As the milkmen used to leave their dairies early in the morning, the function had to be arranged at 7.30 in the morning. My all the staff members including the lady staff and subordinate staff was present at the function even though it was organised before the banking hours much early in morning in a village. Besides O.P. Gupta, the Chairman, V.P.Amar, the Zonal Manager and A.J.Singh (Amarjit Singh) the Regional Manager, Bansal, the General Manager, were also present. The staff of the R.O., especially Dr.S.C.Anand and R.K. Shukla were among the technical staff who were instrument in this achievement. In the evening, after the banking hours there was staff meeting in the branch chaired by the Chairman O.P.Gupta. Here too all the staff members attended this meeting even though they had to come early in the morning at 7.00. This was unique, in the history of the bank that the staff remained on duty for more than 12 hours without any monetary benefit, and even they did not claim for the conveyance. (Actually this staff meeting was to be arranged by B.O. Sector-17 but at eleventh hour its Branch Manager showed his inability). There after there was a Managers’ meeting of the Region at the Z.T. C. In the meeting the Chairman complemented members for my staff for attending both morning and evening functions. I am proud, I had a dedicated team and I was one in team.
