A LEAF FROM MY LIFE –XXIII (Meet V.P.Amar as I know). There is/was nothing heroism in me. The letter was the need of the day for a respectful existence while serving the institution. I was always respectful to my seniors and loved my juniors as my equal colleagues and used to give them full regards irrespective of their status. My only weakness was intolerance to indiscipline and was a little strict also. I simply wanted a family like discipline where I worked and in which capacity I was. I believed in reformation rather than punishment. Some time 5, 6 years back I destroyed most of the papers/files including my educational certificates and merit certificates and letters feeling that my life span was 80 2+ 2- not knowing that I will venture to write some thing about my past life. However, recently, I found a rusty file, containing a few papers though in bad shape including the referred one which escaped destruction. But after posting the referred letter my eyes became moist and emotional with reverence. I salute the great-man. Leaving aside the preceding incident and a few immediate proceeding events I found Amar a man of high caliber, a good administrator, having good command over English and drafting. He was very intelligent and sharp. The credit for the fast growth of business in Sector-16 branch in geometrical progression in early 2.3 years of my five-year stay in the branch goes to Late V.P.Amar besides my own colleagues. Without exception the staff of the Regional Office was at my back. He was providing me the staff as and when I asked with the expansion of the business of the branch in anticipation of regular sanction from the staff Department at the H.O. His technical staff was always at my disposal as and when I needed for preparing and processing my loan proposals. The proposals were discussed across the table, some times in my office, and were sanctioned in a record time. A few mass loan functions were arranged which were presided by the Chairmen. When I joined the branch the working figures of the branch were of a Pay Office and within five years the branch grew from Pay Office to Branch ‘B’ grade (Scale II), ‘A’ grade (Scale III) and then Chief Manager Office. With the up gradation of the branch I was also getting the matching promotions, reward and awards. When the working space became short with the expansion of the business and consequent increase in the staff, I had to use portion of my residence for bank routine and when he came to know of this fact he asked me “Why are you using the residence for the bank work”? Obviously, my reply was, “sir I cannot break the walls”. He instantly asked me to shift to a one kanal kothi in Sector-15-c which was lying vacant and was meant for ARM , Area Manager or Regional Manager even though I was “B” grade (Scale II) Manager and the same kothi was declined to ARM earlier. His three quotes still echo in my mind, many a times. 1- “I am Amar, ARM.” To me, “Most vocal but logical too” when he first met me at ZTC, Chandigarh when I was the Sub-Accountant Incharge of Jagadhri Workshop office and came to attend the Managers meeting taken by General Manager. (There used to be only G.M. of the Bank). 2- “Your style of work is such that this space too will be short for you”, when I told him that I have taken the adjoining building also when I was Manager of Sector-16 branch and he was ZM Chandigarh. 3- “I hope now you must be taking care of your family also”. After my retirement I received letter from him from Nasik. (I am out of station for the coming three days and shall try to post a gist, covering some events of Chandigarh, Phagwara, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Amritsar and Ferozepur as I feel my friends on the face book, either they don’t have time to read or they are shy of giving their comments despite my posting to AIPNBOA, AIPNBOF, All Banks Retirees Friend Club, News for Bank Pensioners, Retired Bank Employees from all over the world., Punjab National Bank, Bankers, The Great Indian Bankers. PNB Officer, PNB Employees besides on my on wall. MY REMAINING PERIOD OF SERVICE IS ALSO FULL OF STRUGGLE AND ACHIEVEMENTS and it may take months to write the important events. But there has been no problem which I could not sustain, solve or face with dignity and there had been no aspersion on my character and for financial irregularities. Many of friend who worked with are on face book and they can vouch for it. Regards).
