A LEVELLED PLAYING FIELD This story still has me petrified. It shocked me for days, I visibly shudder each time I recall everything that transpired. Its so incredible, so much so that If I didnt know the couple in question, Id have attributed the entire episode to my overly active imagination gone haywire. It was one of those mornings when everything just seemed to go awry. First of all, the battery for his alarm clock had died the previous evening but he didnt notice and as usual relied on it to wake him up at 6:00am, instead it was the ring tone of his BlackBerry Q5 that woke him an hour later. Dude, the pop quiz is about to begin, get your butt down here asap Eze screamed into the phone Nnakenyi turned to his bedside clock and saw that it had stopped at 7pm. Sh*t he muttered as he sprang out of bed and into the bathroom, observing that the advantage of living in a self contain apartment was that everything was in one place, kitchen and convenience. He brushed his teeth, splashed water on his face and donned a pair of blue Chinos pants, red and white check shirt and a pair of navy blue All Stars sneakers. He knew there was no way hed get to school in time for his test if he rode the bus, so he hailed a cab and offered to pay extra if the driver got him to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) within the next five minutes. The cabby beat his time line by forty five seconds. Nnakenyi paid the cabby, took the stairs leading to the faculty of social sciences two at a time and at the entrance to his class, bumped into another student equally rushing to meet a class. What the...! he started and froze mid-sentence as the person he bumped into gathered his books from the floor, smiled apologetically and handed them to him. At that instant, he was speechless, the storm that had been brewing which naturally would have climaxed at this point into a harangue suddenly ceased as he gazed at the exquisite being smiling at him. Layers of frustration, pent up feelings, anger bitterness and resentment just dissipated. Time seemed to have stood still as he stared at this feminine wonder who although was far from physically beautiful, was perfect in every way. She possessed neither height nor facial beauty, plain would best describe her physical features. She had the type of body that in local parlance would be referred to as lepa. Chialoka, Chichi as she was known by her friends adjusted her horn-rimmed glasses, stretched her smile wider and in a low husky voice that was almost like a whisper said Im really sorry. Nnakenyi offered her his hand, felt the warmth of her small, soft hand as he replied dont think about it. she said okay and laughed nervously. Will his highness be joining us for the the quiz today? that was unmistakably the voice of Professor Umeja. Nooo sssir, I mean Yesss sssir! Nnakenyi stammered. To Be Continued.
