A LIBERAL Senator has written to the West Australian police commissioner urging him to investigate almost $1 million allegedly siphoned from the account of a university union. Queensland Senator James McGrath also accused the University of Western Australia’s Student Guild of a “cover-up” following an investigation into the matter. Guild president Tom Henderson confirmed an employee — a former financial officer with the union — was recently dismissed after “irregularities” were found during the reconciliation of the 2013 audit. It is understood the man was on medical leave at the time. The club voted in May to hire audit and tax firm BDO to investigate the matter, which found about $870,000 had been misappropriated from the club’s account. The money had been allegedly siphoned off over three years. “Based on the initial findings of that investigation, the staff member has been dismissed for serious misconduct. As this situation involves a potential legal matter we are unable to provide any further comment at this time,” Mr Henderson said. Several guild council members said they were refused a copy of the report and said the guild’s membership of about 20,000 had not been informed of the matter. theaustralian.au/higher-education/liberal-senator-urges-police-to-investigate-alleged-uni-fund-theft/story-e6frgcjx-1227068883986
