A LOGICAL RESPONSE: Regarding the Broadway World Nomination - TopicsExpress

A LOGICAL RESPONSE: Regarding the Broadway World Nomination Controversy: I see lots of people posting lots of things about these awards - been around Phoenix area theatre for 20 years - here are my impressions: If you think LOGICALLY AND CLEARLY about them without personal feelings attached, youll KNOW this is true......If someone wants to incorporate a new kind of theatre award - I am ALL for it! Zonis cover only a few people per year and there are many, many more artists who deserve recognition. So few shows are recognized by reviewers - precious few of them left - and its nice to have some type of award. The Broadway World Awards were ill conceived - basically to drive traffic to the site THAT IS ALL. So they allow people to potentially nominate themselves and anyone they deem appropriate regardless of level of talent - could be great, could be dubious. O.K..... So you got that. But as I said PRECIOUS few people even know about these awards and so you have to a) know about them b) either nominate yourself or tell someone to nominate you because no one knows about them (I personally did neither this year because I personally feel they are meaningless). SO - when you look at the nominees, you can see clearly that there are some VERY important people from our theatre community left out and other very dubious nominations in multiple quantities. STILL not a problem. But its the fact that the awards are barely known that brings to the surface that people who are nominated HAVE likely nominated themselves or told someone to nominate them - a few probably found them via a web search or something or a performance that was so extraordinarily memorable they sought it out to vote for. Most of our theatre community would never, ever consider nominating themselves for something - I sure wouldnt. Nor would I tell my friends to do so. Nor would most of the people I know. So, I think there is just an immediate assumption present that people have either nominated themselves or told others to nominate them. Clearly there are people out there with a wonderful fan club - thats awesome! Everyone in theatre should have personal supporters. So, it is what it is - clearly people have come forward to say, Heck, yeah! I nominated this person - we love them. Thats awesome. I hope in future years, more people know about them so it is more fairly distributed among deserving nominees - and more representative of what our theatre community has done in the last year thats all Im saying. End story.
