A LOOK BACK: Wareham—the Gateway to Cape Cod. The twin lighthouses on Route 28 flanking the entrance to the downtown area were built in the early 1930s. The idea reportedly originated with the Wareham Chamber of Commerce. Twenty-five hundred dollars was appropriated, and the two fieldstone lighthouses were built to show that Wareham was indeed, the Gateway to Cape Cod. The dedication ceremony was quite a spectacular affair. Senator Donald Nicholson and Congressman Charles Gifford both praised the town in their speeches. A parade, led by the Wareham Police, marched to the lighthouse ceremony. The Wareham Band followed along with a variety of floats created by local businesses and organizations. The lighthouse dedication ceremony coincided with the tercentennial of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. To add to the festivities, employees of the Southeastern Massachusetts Power and Electric Company arrived in Colonial costumes. The two lighthouses today are such a part of town that they are prominent in the Police Department logo. Around 1997, the lantern rooms atop the structures were restored by the Town’s Municipal Maintenance Department. And we can thank the Wareham Garden Club for planting and maintaining the attractive grounds surrounding this Wareham landmark.
