A LOVE STORY: THE DAY THAT CHANGED MY WORLD (for the better) It was a lazy Sunday afternoon when a dream became reality in my life. It was nothing unusual about that day. I woke up late that morning and did the normal routine before getting ready to go to band practice, eat some breakfast read the funny papers, take a bath and shave and load up my amp and guitar in my 1964 Mercury Comet. I then drove two blocks over from Hillcrest Drive, crossing Jones Boulevard and to a house on the corner of Nancy Drive. I met Jimmy(the drummer. it was his house), Bruce (the lead singer) James (the Bass player) and Dan (the lead guitarist). We set up and began to practice songs like In The Midnight Hour, Louie Louie, Magic Carpet Ride, Born To Be Wild, Blue Suede Shoes, I Gotta Line On You, and many more. After all, we were in a garage so we played garage band songs. At some point, Bruces girlfriend showed up and with her was her best friend, some girl named Brenda. It was at that point that there was a shift in my world, the change had begun. I immediately was smitten with this girl but she was not. She actually liked the lead guitar player and alas, I played rhythm. But you know, every love story has to have a beginning, and this was ours. Eventually, Dan and Bruce, via Debbie, set us up for a date and we went to a bonfire for the Central High Homecoming. She didnt have a date for the homecoming and I was in the same fix, so is the nature of fate if one believed in fate versus godly destiny. We went to Sir Pizza and ordered a large half mushroom half hamburger pizza (we still go to Sir Pizza 45 years later) and ate one or two slices. It was either a case of love, nervousness or a combination of both. I was shy (and still am) as we were going out on a double date with Bruce and Debbie. Bruce gave the advice that I should just talk about something that I know about, so we devised a plan that at some point Bruce would bring up the subject of Paul McCartney being dead (since I knew all the various clues in the songs and on the album). When we picked up Brenda at her house there was Bruce and Debbie in the front seat and Brenda and I in the back seat. As we sat there in the driveway on 426 4th Avenue, Bruce said, Rodney, why dont you tell us about Paul McCartney being dead. I reached behind me and pulled out Beatles albums and began to expound upon the various clues. Poor Brenda, trapped in the backseat with a mental case who was in love. So it begins. To make a long story short (oops, too late), I pursued, she ran, she called the Bailey Twins to come and get her when I was coming over, (did I mention that she ran), I caught, she fell (in love), she introduced me to Jesus, we married, had a son, traveled the world, and 45 years later. July 14th, on a Friday afternoon at 6:30 P.M (we got married on the half hour, so we would be married on the upswing and not the downswing of the clock) at Bellwood Baptist Church. Here it is 42 years later and I can still remember seeing her walk down the aisle and she was just as much a vision of loveliness as she was walking in that garage on Nancy Avenue. To some of our close friends, she is known as The Goddess, to me my continual dream. Happy Anniversary Brenda Love and 42+ years of memories and kisses Rodney Thank You Lord Boyd
