A Lesson to Learn from Yacon/Ground Apple/Bhuin Syau (Nepali) - TopicsExpress

A Lesson to Learn from Yacon/Ground Apple/Bhuin Syau (Nepali) growers-Some young Entrepreneurs (I really admire and appreciate them) excitedly planted Yacon in fairly a large area in Bhaktapur. But unfortunately the land they used was not suitable-clay and swampy, hence most plants died due to water logging. This sadly caused a big loss to the young Entrepreneurs but hope that they will recover in coming crops. I wish them luck. Yacon is a root crop that needs sandy or sandy loam soil with good drainage. You can view in the photos the healthy and dying plants and the edible roots. There is a good scope of producing ground apple in Nepali hills (kachhaar) but please consult well with experienced people before you venture for commercial production. At least avoid clay and water logging soil for better production. Yacon is a pre-biotic and antioxidant food good for human health. This is also fairly new crop in Nepal.
