A Letter from Mayor Call: Late Saturday afternoon a ferocious storm passed through Utah County, dropping a tremendous amount of water in a very short time. The effects on portions of the culinary water system of Pleasant Grove have been devastating. Parts of Pleasant Grove, especially in the southeast, depend on springs high up Battle Creek canyon. The storm hit the west face of Mt. Timpanogos and caused massive amounts of debris to slide down to our springs, fouling the source. Pleasant Grove crews made an attempt to hike up the canyon Saturday night, but the terrain was too treacherous. These crews then spent all day Sunday reaching the springs and assessing the damage. In the meantime, Public Works personnel have been emptying the fouled tanks, chlorinating them, and refilling in an attempt to restore clean drinking water to a number of our residents who have been under a boil advisory since Saturday night. Our employees have been working night and day since the storm first hit, and I am deeply grateful for their efforts and their expertise. Our first priority is the safety of our citizens. I am pleased to announce that thanks to the amazing efforts of our Public Works department, led by Director Lynn Walker, state water officials this morning pronounced our culinary system clean and free of all contaminants. Residents in the boil advisory zone may now drink and use the water without concern. This is wonderful news, and we owe a lot to our dedicated employees who worked to make this possible in such a short amount of time. It is also important to understand that while we will restore clean culinary water very soon, we will be dealing with the effects of the storm for many months to come. It changed the geography of the canyon to a certain extent, and those changes now have to be mitigated to ensure a safe supply of water into the future. We are fortunate to have experts and personnel to deal with these changes, and I am indebted to Mr. Walker and his team for what they have done already, and for what they will continue to do in the coming weeks and months. Thank you all for your patience as our crews work toward immediate and lasting solutions to what Mother Nature brought us on Saturday. Sincerely, Bruce Call Mayor, Pleasant Grove City
