A Little Portland History ~ The Morning Oregonian Building was completed in 1892 in a richarson-romanesque style and demolished in 1950. At the time it was built this Oregonian building was the tallest structure in Portland with a prominent clock tower. Rumor has it that, before the building was demolished, the Oregonian employees were allowed to take pieces of the ornate hardware as mementos. We are fortunate enough to have a complete doorknob set (two plates/two knobs)! The hardware was manufactured by Yale & Towne. The design was a variation on the official Oregon seal. The doorknob features the Morning Oregonians initials while the backplate shows sailing ships, covered wagons and animals under a great American eagle. Note that the escutcheons are mirror images so they would always face the same edge of the door.
