A Little Story : It was her parents marriage anniversary and little Palak had been saving pocket money for a long time for a surprise gift. Youre not allowed to cross the gate. Ill complain to mom! her elder sister warned, but she didnt pay heed. She ran as fast as her little feet could move, her palms getting sweaty, being barely big enough to hold all the coins. She finally reached the shop and dropped all the coins at the counter. What chocolate do you have for nine rupees? she asked, rubbing her sweaty palms on her red cotton frock. None, he replied. Its either five or ten rupees. The evening was growing darker and she had little time to waste. So she bought three small chocolates and asked him to gift wrap the same. Then she returned home - happy, excited and thrilled to have done something good. She rang the doorbell and waited with her hands behind her back, wondering how happy her parents would be to see the gift. But all of her thoughts were cut short when her mother opened the door and landed a hard slap right across her face. Palak staggered and held the door. She didnt understand why. Her mother was angry and was speaking angry words. But Palak didnt seem to be able to hear her. She was dazed. Inside, her sister wore a sly grin on her face. Again, she didnt understand why. But she kept her hands tightly clutched though they were hardly big enough to hold the gift. She couldnt, after all, spoil the surprise. While it is important to discipline your kids, is equally important to understand them.
