A Love Song is a vehicle for so much. It can be the story of the Joy of being in love, the pain of being rejected in love, the fury of life after that rejection, the anger at the things ones lover has done - the worry about ones own behaviour within that relationship. It can be about treachery, unfairness, yet for all the songs protestations it will still unavoidably have a deep seated love for the subject of the song. I wrote my last (Tangent) Love Song in 2006 and it was pretty damn complex. A Rollercoaster of Emotions is how my friend Guy Manning described it. It came at the end of a 12 year long relationship and examined the whole bloody thing from top to bottom. From watching the stars together - to the realisation that we would probably never meet again. A few friends of the band worried that it might be too personal for some people to want to listen to it (they were right - I NEVER listen to it) In the end, the debate was so furiously contested that I decided to get a casting vote, I decided, just once, to use my address book and ask someone whod done something similar before.. I asked Peter Hammill. He said (and I paraphrase very much because I simply cant remember the exact words) that I was duty bound to release it, because it was REAL, it had really happened and a songwriters job was to write about the things that have affected them. So The Full Gamut was released on Not As Good As The Book and some of you know it better than me, because I havent heard it once since the final mix was completed at Guys house in 07. One review actually asked the question Whay didnt he just write her a letter? I laughed my socks off. I have always enjoyed writing the love song. In a great and fruitful relationship now with Sally since 2008, well there have been some private songs like the (currently lost) Rock Chick which was a Valentines day gift. There are parts of Down And Out which will always be for her, and when we play Where Are They Now I always look for her in the audience so I know who the relevant bits are going out to. But The Tangent hasnt had love songs now for a good while and I wanted to write one. And I wanted it to be a multi levelled thing with pros, cons, agonisations, self doubt, happiness, treachery, disappointment, heartache BUT - most of all.. the JOY of being in love. So I wrote about something else I love and always have loved. Something that has made me mad, let me down, tortured me and brought me so much frustration and joy I dont know where to put it all. I wrote about Prog. Codpieces And Capes will be the second track of the album A Spark In The Aether by The Tangent. For 2015!
