A MAN of humble birth from Nazareth was executed by crucifixion outside the walls of the city of Jerusalem in about AD 33. For a period of barely three years his preaching mission had been enthusiastically recieved by the crowds, but it enraged the religious authorities - particularly the aristocractic priesthood which controlled the temple in Jerusalem. Crucifixion was an apparently humiliating end for a man who, many believed, would revive the Jewish faith and restore the political state of his people.
