A MEMORIAL SERVICE for John Overberg will be held in the sanctuary above Father John’s this Sunday, August 10, at 1 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. JOHN OVERBERG By John Trippy “At Father John’s, in the middle of the afternoon, in the middle of yet another project, in the middle of everything....I was told that two young ladies were asking to talk to me. Another school donation or summer job or or or....? As I turned the corner, solemn eyes recognized me and a sense of knowing washed across me...and yet I didnt anticipate what I was to hear: Did you know that Daddy died? I instantly felt the chill of finality and just wanted to hug those two young women. A few years prior they had lost their mother, and now they stood before me courageously announcing their father’s passing. Only a few days previous, John Overberg -- with cane in hand -- was waving at me by the side entrance of Father Johns. Did you hear I had a heart transplant? Im out tonight celebrating. Can’t wait for a bison burger....Oh, and I can have one beer a week! Im getting my walk in so I can celebrate tonight! Always a smile in deed and word, and always a way of slowing me down to talk in a conscious sharing of the moment....like it used to be before texting. He was a model “monk,” deliberate with each step. His life reflecting a gentle prayer of love and hope. Pray for us, John, as you watch over and protect your girls. They are your gift to us, as you are so clearly reflected in their eyes...as they looked at me...and melted me: “Did you know Daddy died?
