A MERMAID HERE, A MERMAID THERE. THIS IS WHERE YOU’LL VACATION NEXT. You don’t know what lurks beneath Africa’s oceans. But you could probably guess. Dugongs. Underwater pyramids. A unique sighting of the ‘said to be extinct’ Plesiosaur. Then again, there’s no fun in guessing, so... Don your finest wetsuit for a whirlwind holiday and scuba tour in, below and around Africa’s deep blue sea. Africa’s first underwater hotel has opened in the latest in a trend for underwater accommodation. The Manta Underwater Room lies 820 ft from the tropical island of Pemba, just off the coast of Tanzania and Zanzibar. The luxury accommodation hosts three floors, with the lowest giving guests a view like no other. Sitting 13 ft under the Indian Ocean, the bottom floor room boasts a master bedroom surrounded by the sea. Taking reservations now. In the day, guests can observe the shoals of fish and the underwater creatures making the coral developing at the room’s base their home, while at night squid and octopus-watching is the thing to do. This unique experience costs $1,500 (AU$1,782) a night. Better start saving. Along with the chance to sleep beneath the waves, the luxury getaway has a balcony, perfect for catching some rays or stargazing at night. The lack of light pollution in this part of the world means that spectacular views into the sky can be viewed. The middle floor hosts a relaxing dining area and bathroom, as well as access to the master bedroom via a ladder. The design is said to be based on the first ever underwater room, the Utter Inn near Stockholm. Designed by the same man, Mikael Genberg, the room lies three metres below Lake Mälaren in Västerås and opened in 2000. The island of Pemba is little known in tourist circles, even though it is home to white sands and clear waters. But this foray into the underwater hotel scene will be sure to prove successful, as with other ventures into the world of sub-aquatic accommodation. The firm behind the development, Genberg Underwater Hotels Company, said that this would not be their only addition to the underwater club, as they plan to open more in locations across the world.
