A MESSAGE FRM KORY COOK, MUSIC DIRECTOR AND CHIEF ANNOUNCER AT KRTU 91.7FM June 21, 2014 at 7:07am This week the extraordinary jazz pioneer Horace Silver died at his home in New Rochelle, NY at the age of 85. I remember the first time I heard Silvers heavy and funky piano sound on 1959s Blowing the Blues Away, and I recall feeling very lucky. More than just the creator of a style of jazz some like to call hard bop, Silver was a highly accessible, yet individual voice among other piano players and bandleaders. Silvers regular stint with Blue Note Records throughout a decades-long career and the soulful simplicity he brought to jazz are only a couple of reasons why his music sits at the core of KRTUs programming. Our station ranks at the top of jazz radio stations across the globe, to be admired and enjoyed by multiple generations and for decades to come. And thanks to all of you, its all excellent programming. Like Silvers cherished music, KRTU is where the accessible and mainstream meets the more challenging and experimental. Programming In case you missed it in our recent member newsletter, weve recently added/replaced a couple specialty shows on KRTU. Welcome KRTU Office Manager and host Jacqueline Sotelo to bring you Women in Jazz Thursday nights at 8pm. Its a show celebrating unsung musicians of the past and present. Host Chuck Parrish, formerly of The Jazz Lab, now joins host Bradley Kayser for new program Riffs: Conversations in Jazz, heard Tuesdays at 8pm on KRTU. New Releases Last week I spoke with vocalist, bandleader and rising star Jose James before his show this weekend at the Empire Theater. I asked him if he thinks those who prefer a more pure, traditional sound in jazz may be turned off by the R&B and hip-hop sensibilities in his music, and especially on his new release. He said he thinks todays focus is more on the individual artist rather than on what to call the style of music theyre performing. On that note...here is a list of new releases from artists, some mainstream to the core and others not-so-mainstream, added to the rotation since mid-April 2014. Theres something on this list for every show, so dig in and enjoy these tasty jams!...
