A MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN TO SIERRA LEONE BEFORE. I encountered my former Uni friend yesterday while doing my shopping and we had a very long chat. I havent seen him in a while now. We talked about days at school and then the barrage of questions about whether the situation in Sierra Leone is safe now. He said he has a friend there now whose wife works for the UN and whether they will just be restricted to the UN compound and only on other places of work. i was very surprised about his perception of Sierra Leone that we still have conflict there even when the war officially ended in 2000 and we have had peaceful elections after that. I then spent my time to educate him that i was even there recently and i am planning to visit there sometime this year. I explained to him in detail how foreigners enjoy the spirit of our hospitality and making them feel welcome. I talked about the interactions foreigners make with locals, and i spoke at length about our stable democracy. After we separated i thought do we as Sierra Leonenas need to do more to correct this international image problem? What ways can we do to let the world know Sierra Leone is still not what the Blood Diamond Movie presented to the world. It has moved a lot from that past.
