A May 11 press release from the City of Berlin Police Department indicates that the department received a complaint of a domestic disturbance at 228 Canal St., Berlin, on May 11 at 6:55 a.m. It was reported that a 29-year-old female at the residence is pregnant, a male subject had battered her, and the victim was complaining of injuries to her stomach area. City of Berlin police officers and Green Lake County Sheriffs deputies arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the residents of the home. Several attempts were made with no response. As the investigation continued, it was learned that the victim, her 1-1/2 year-old child, the victims mother, and the suspect were in the home. Officers maintained a perimeter and continued attempting contact with the subjects. From prior police investigations, officers had knowledge that the male subject may be in possession of a firearm. The Green Lake County Combined Tactical responded to the scene along with Waushara County Sheriffs Department K-9 officer and K-9. Residents in the area were informed of the situation, and several home were evacuated. Police also alerted St. Johns Lutheran Church, as church was in service and located directly across the street from the incident. All church attendees were safely removed from the area. Communication was established with the victim, and she exited the home, receiving medical attention from the City of Berlin Ambulance Service. The victims mother and young child then exited the house and were also examined by paramedics on scene. Telephone contact was then made with the suspect, and a short time later, the suspect exited the home and was arrested without incident. The suspect has been identified as Rico R. Velasquez, age 36, of 228 Canal St., Berlin. Velasquez has been placed on a probation hold, and domestic abuse charges will be forwarded to the Green Lake County District Attorneys Office. Velasquez is currently being held at the Green Lake County Jail. I am pleased how well Green Lake County law enforcement agencies came together and handled this incident. Our county-wide combined training has proven once again to be a very valuable asset to officers and the public, says Captain Kevin J. Block. Captain Block concludes, It is always a good situation when incidents like this end peacefully and nobody is hurt and officers return home safe.
