A Meat Eaters Delight During the twelve years that Srila Prabhupada was physically with us, he had us offering Mangal Arati sweets to the Deities at 4:00 AM everyday, 365 days a year. I was trained as a pujari in the Ottawa temple how to make all the Mangal Arati sweets by Laksminatha and Krsnadasa Christopher Zajchowski prabhus , and was given brahminical initiation so that I could cook and offer these sweets to Sri Sri Gaura Nitai every morning. There was no such thing as vegan sweets in 1976 -77. Srila Prabhupada never ever said that if the milk is from a commerical dairy, then we must stop offering barfi, sandesh, rasagullas, khir sweet rice and rabri to the deities , but as an alternative we must now offer vegan sweets. There was no question of stopping the offering of milk sweets because we could not find a dairy of protected cows. Srila Prabhupada never made an issue of this, except we all new he wanted our own farms, which we usually never had the man or woman power to sustain. Srila Prabhupadas dream and instruction to us was to have rural community projects , sustainable daiva varnasrama farms , that would then support the temples and Govindas Restaurants in the city. I saw two such rural projects develop in the Toronto area open and close due to a shortage of man / woman power. The same think happened in Hemmingford, the farm we had for the Montreal temple in the late 70s Going vegan is a personal choice. In our older years, we need to cut back on dairy anyways, whether from protected cows or not, because it is a kapha food, ( though very pacifying to vata ) and may contribute to inflammation, congestion etc... I stayed under the care of an ayurvedic doctor in Manipal / Udupi for 45 days. I have a kapha imblance called chronic low agni, sluggish metabolism. He told me to stay away from any dairy except that he ordered me to take a small amount of chach or buttermilk right after lunch, and a half cup of hot milk at night to calm my vata down. I am arrogant but not so arrogant to tell an ayurvedic vaidya ( doctor ) who studied ayurveda in university for seven years and who had been practicing for 15 yrs on thousands of patients that I know better than him and that he is in maya for using dairy and is not a vegan yet His dairy might have been from a family cow, but thats another point Srila Prabhupada never ruled dairy products out of his diet. He never said ONLY give me the dairy of unprotected cows, otherwise I will be vegan, and I will guilt trip or criticise everyone else who is not Just now · Edited · Like · 1 Gaura Das Srila Prabhupada explicitly explained that the way to turn the meat-eaters away from meat to prasadam was to cook curd in ghee with vegetables, and they will get tasty animal protein in a human way and forget about meat entirely. Isnt that what happened to most of us ? He even gave a specific recipe for this. Did Prabhuapda say to cook tofu in coconut oil to accomplish this ? No. He was against soya products. However, I know that there are people today who choose to be vegans. They dont accept the siddhanta of the Bhagavad Gita, so at some preaching centers, the vegan diet is featured, because that is what works there. We are not fanatics one way or the other, or are we ?
