A Mediterranean diet is associated with longer telomeres than those eating a typical American diet. Even better is a whole foods plant-based diet. This study only looked at one point in time to examine the association between diet and telomere length; our earlier study last year published in The Lancet Oncology was an intervention study. We found that when people went on our diet and lifestyle program, they actually lengthened their telomeres by 10%. Its still the only controlled study showing that any intervention may lengthen telomeres.
