A Merry Perihelion to you all. Yesterday, Earth, in its oval orbit, came closer to the Sun than at any other time of year. About 3.5 million miles closer than in July. Seems like a lot. But Earths oval orbit deviates only about 3% from a perfect circle. And since its currently winter in the Northern Hemisphere, this orbital fact cant possibly be the origin of the Seasons. Those are instead traceable to Earths axial tilt. So if you see astronomers dancing in the street this week, this may be why. -NDTyson
