A Message from Pastor Dan “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” Luke 15 Amazingly, the three letter symbol for the Helsinki, Finland airport is HEL. Would you fly into an airport named HEL? On top of this, Finnair offers a daily flight from Copenhagen to HEL with the flight number AY666. No kidding. And today is Friday the 13th. Would you have flown flight number 666 from Copenhagen to HEL today, Friday the 13th? Evidently it made it with no mishap because it departed this morning at around 5:30 a.m. our time and landed in HEL about 7:00 a.m. It was reported that the flight was full, or maybe that’s fool. Anyway, I guess there was no one with friggatriskaidekaphobia on board. That’s the name for a person who is deathly afraid of Friday the 13th. There are supposedly 17 to 21 million such people in the U.S., who actually alter their day when Friday the 13th rolls around. Silly. I hope you are not one of them. As Christians we don’t believe in superstition, fate or bad luck. We believe in Jesus who has all authority in heaven and earth, yet is willing to chase after one lost sheep and rescue it from HEL, I mean Hell. He asks the question in such a way that he implies it is a silly question with an obvious answer. “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” Of course! And so it is with Jesus and his flock. So it is with you and me, his beloved sheep, who too often stray and get lost. We will talk more about the parable of the lost sheep on Sunday. In the meantime I am not planning any flights to HEL. But I might consider a flight to New Haven, Connecticut. Its airport code is HVN. I like that. I would fly a Boeing 777 to HVN any day. And some day I will. 777 to Heaven. One way!
