A Message from a U.S. Senator... Today, the top 1% in America - TopicsExpress

A Message from a U.S. Senator... Today, the top 1% in America owns 37% of the wealth of our nation while the bottom 60% owns 2%. One family, the Walton family, is now worth $153 billion – which is more than what 49 million other families are worth. In the U.S. today we have more wealth and income inequality than since the Gilded Age of the late 1920s, and more inequality than any other major nation on earth. That is why I have introduced a bill in Congress that would strengthen the estate tax, and help ensure that the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share of taxes. I need you to help me and Americans for Tax Fairness to pass this vitally important legislation. Ask your U.S. Senators today to support the Responsible Estate Tax Act, S.2899. We must start addressing the massive level of wealth inequality that exists in America. Multi-millionaire and billionaire families must begin paying their fair share of taxes. Incredibly, House Republican leaders not only oppose this type of progressive legislation, but they are moving hard in the other direction. They are committed to REPEALING the estate tax – providing a huge tax break to the billionaire class. And a majority in the House of Representatives is already co-sponsoring legislation to do that. The Responsible Estate Tax Act will require the super-wealthy to pay more in taxes, impose a 10% surtax on billionaire estates and close a major loophole that allows many wealthy families to avoid the estate tax altogether. Even with these changes, 99.7% of Americans will NOT pay a nickel in the estate tax. But our country will raise billions of dollars more from those who can afford it – money that we desperately need to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, improve education, transform our energy system, and care for our children and seniors. Debbie, this legislation is only going to become law if you and I fight for it. If we make enough noise, and get others to join us. I need you with me, and I need your U.S. Senators with me too. Please tell them, loudly and clearly, to support this legislation. No one is guaranteed success in America, but everyone deserves a fair shot to succeed. The promise of America should be for everyone, not just for the wealthy. Thanks for all you do, Senator Bernie Sanders (VT) Bernie Sanders is considering a run for President. Heres more on Bernie...
