** A Mighty Girl . Courtney Barich is going to attend her prom in a potato sack and wants her fellow Mighty Girls to join her! A last minute epiphany led the 12th grader from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada “to forgo her opportunity to light up the room at her graduation dance this June and instead light up the lives of nearly 200 young children halfway around the world living in a small orphanage in the Philippines.” https://facebook/amightygirl/photos/a.360833590619627.72897.316489315054055/654768921226091/?type=1&permPage=1 . Courtney attends Holy Cross High School, and is going on a school spring break trip to help the Saint Martin de Porres Orphanage, which houses over 170 children. In planning for the trip, she has been thinking of different ways she could raise money for the orphanage, setting a target of collecting $10,000 in donations. At the same time, she and her mother were searching for a dress for her senior prom. She found the perfect dress at a local boutique, and its $700 price tag fit within her budget. But a day’s delay before she would be able to get the dress fitted gave her time to think: “That’s just crazy money to spend on a dress for one night. It’s just insane.” . In an interview with the Surrey Leader, Courtney explained how as we drove home I started to think about how my generation is pretty spoiled. I felt pretty selfish, so I thought I just can’t do this when so many people in the world have nothing.” After her mother told her you could wear a potato sack and you would still look good, Courtney was struck by an idea: “Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on a grad gown, Barich decide she would instead wear a dress fashioned from a burlap sack,” and use that to fundraise for the orphanage’s needs. . Courtney bought a burlap sack for $4 at a local store and is looking for someone who can line and sew it for her -- no easy task, since burlap is too tough for many sewing machines. So far she’s just beginning to raise donations, but whether she reaches her $10,000 target or not, she’ll donate all she raises. “Ever since my sister graduated, I’ve been thinking about the dress I would wear but once I found one I realized I didn’t really want it – that I would rather give the money to someone else,” she says. “No matter what I raise, I’m still wearing burlap to grad, that’s for sure.” .
