A Month of Singing, Cooking and Learning! In December, the students in Ms. Tanya Tone’s PreKindergarten performed in their Christmas Pageant, singing traditional songs such as the “First Noel” and “Away in a Manger”. The children have become so adept at American Sign Language – part of Ms. Tone’s phonics program – that, while learning to sing “Silent Night,” the children also learned to “sing” the song using American Sign Language. Recently, the PreKindergarten students worked with the Kindergarten students on a cross-curricular project including reading, cooking, math, and art. Together, the students read Stone Soup, by Marcia Brown and then visited the new Parish kitchen and to make their own Stone Soup. Each child was assigned an ingredient to bring including, carrots, onions, celery, broth, noodles, zucchini, and potatoes. Mrs. Dorothy Rotondo, the Kindergarten teacher, provided the key ingredient - the stone! The teachers and a few parent volunteers helped the children measure ingredients and cook the soup. After tasting their creation the Kindergarten students created a graph showing what part of the soup the children liked best. The Pre-K students recreated the soup in their classroom as an art project showing the recipe for the soup. Be sure to look for their recipes and graphs in the hallway on the first floor. Next, appropriately timed with all of this cold weather, our Pre-K students will begin the study of penguins in their Science lessons. They will read books about penguins, focusing on the Emperor penguin, and how penguins take turns caring for their young. The children will also complete penguin art projects using the various shapes they are learning about in Math. We are very proud of our Pre-K students and how much they have learned during this half of the school year. Join us for our Open House on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 1:00-3:00. Visit our classrooms, meet our teachers, staff, and parent tour guides!
