A "National Taco Day" insult Arturo Carmona, Presente.org It seems obvious to most of us — not all Latinos grow up eating tacos. The idea that we do is just another harmful stereotype of Latino people and cultures. But that stereotype was embraced, validated, and propagated by Fox News Channel host Brian Kilmeade. During a celebration of “National Taco Day” on the October 4 Fox and Friends broadcast, Kilmeade asked meteorologist Maria Molina, "So what are the tips we need to know? You grew up on tacos, correct?" But Molina was born in Nicaragua — tacos aren’t even commonly eaten in her country! Kilmeade is clearly ignorant — and the only cure for ignorance is education. Tell Kilmeade that not all Latinos eat tacos, and ask him to apologize for his hurtful stereotype. In the United States, Latinos come from more than 20 countries in North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, and dozens of ethnic groups. Each of these has its own unique culture — and cuisine. "National Taco Day" — a fake holiday made up by corporations to sell products — has absolutely nothing to do with Latino people or culture. Neither does the idea that anyone with a Latin identity must have grown up eating tacos — it’s a common stereotype that denies the richness and diversity of our many cultures, as well as the diversity of the many individuals who claim Latino heritage. Kilmeade may not have intended to be hurtful when he spoke to Molina on air. But his position on the most viewed cable news network gives his words additional power, and makes Kilmeade responsible for correcting his mistake just as publicly as he made it. Please join us in asking Brian Kilmeade to apologize to Maria Molina and Latino Americans for promoting a damaging stereotype. Thanks and ¡adelante!
