A New Access Icon Wednesday, Jul 30, 2014 IndependenceFirst, 540 S. 1st St. in Milwaukee, will be the First business in Wisconsin to use a new accessibility icon depicting a more active wheelchair user to mark accessible parking spaces, in part because of the efforts of two local Girl Scouts. This move to a more dynamic depiction of people with disabilities takes place on the 24th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the bipartisan civil rights act promoting accessibility in the community and workplace for people with disabilities. Girl Scouts Kaitlin Somppi and Camryn Ribar partnered with IndependenceFirst and ACAP (Adaptive Community Approach Program) as they are pursuing a Girl Scout Silver Award project to promote the use of the new icon in Metro Milwaukee.
