A New Albany woman has been arrested on three charges of illegally acquiring or obtaining possession of a controlled substance. Jessica Gaines, 28, reported to the Lafayette County Sheriff on Thursday, June 27, on a capias issued by a Lafayette County Grand Jury on June 7. On September 10, 2012, Gaines was employed as a Registered Nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford when she allegedly stole controlled substances by using an off-duty nurse’s electronic medication dispensing machine log-in code to gain access to Hydromorphone and Morphine Sulfate. The hospital became suspicious during a review of the electronic dispensing system reports and contacted authorities. If convicted, Gaines faces up to five years behind bars on each count and a fine of up to $1,000. She is currently free on a $5,000 bond. Joe Sanderson of the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Division investigated the case. Special Assistant Attorney General Brad McCullouch will prosecute the case. As with all criminal charges, the defendant is presumed to be innocent until convicted in a court of law.
