A New PG Programme in Urban Design at Symbiosis International - TopicsExpress

A New PG Programme in Urban Design at Symbiosis International University In architecture you learn how to design buildings and to be sensitive about the immediate environment. In urban design you are taken beyond these, into the world of revealing complexities of a neighborhood, a settlement, a town or a city. The concerns of study include: how a city grows, how it can be a planned growth, how to plan services at a city level, etc. In addition, how are the roads planned, how do road crossings react to the vehicular flow and movement of people, how should the amenities (like school, shops, bank, park) be placed in a planned development so that, for most of the residents, they are accessible by walking. Urban mobility is to be well thought of in a city’s development plan. The experience shows that road network is the most complex to design and comprehend. There are various modes of transport in a city. At primary level they are railways, motorways airways and waterways. A city functions very well where there is a well worked out integration of these travel modes. Imagine, if you take a Metrorail and alight at a station from where you need to further travel to a point by road transport and it is available just a level or two below in the same station, how convenient would it be! Such points are called interchanges and they form important transit nodes in a city’s fabric. All this and more will form a part of the study at the proposed M. Arch. Programme in Urban Design at the School of Planning and Architecture under Symbiosis International University. Our country has a legacy of 3000 years B.C. and a glorious historical past that created a number of heritage monuments at different places, some of them being internationally acclaimed like the Taj Mahal and the Ajanta and Ellora cave architecture, and living town of Jaisalmer and capital city of Hampi that belonged to Vijayanagar Empire. A lot of study and research can be done on these, interpreted and furthered into the present day architecture and urban design concepts that may influence future development of our cities and towns and, sentinels therein attracting tourists to feel and experience these creations. People then would be proud of living in such a milieu that only a sensitive urban designer may offer through foresight and planning. The programme prepares students have good design and managerial skills and gives inputs on policy and governance. So, are you ready take up this vocation?
