A New Year and a New Congress The ball has dropped in Times Square to mark the beginning of this new year, and the doors of a new Congress will be opened just days from now on January 6. The overarching question on everyone’s mind is, will this Congress be the one to move beyond the false notion of irreconcilable political differences and tackle the issues critical to the quality and prosperity of America’s future? The American people certainly hope so. A Wall Street Journal poll from just prior to last year’s election reported that, in 2010, just 34 percent of respondents favored candidates who support compromise to gain consensus, while 57 percent preferred those who stuck to positions. Last year, however, 50 percent favored compromisers and just 42 percent supported those who won’t. That represents a remarkable 31 point swing in just four years.
