A Newspaper Man Sells Langtry a Mine There are incidents of Langtry’s visits to California which are of interest and which have never been published. It has been said, and with truth, no doubt, that she did many shrewd things in the way of advertising. At one time she rented a house somewhere out in the Mission and tried to make everybody believe she intended to remain there until gathered to her fathers, when she would be laid away in an elaborate vault in Laurel Hill cemetery, or some other city of the dead. But it was all a myth. Then she bought some ground over in Nevada, had a hole dug in it and called it the Langtry mine. Sam Davis, a well-known newspaper man, says he sold her the ground for $200. She was in the statue scene of Galatea in “Pygmalion and Galatea,” and during the scene Davis was in the wings. She dared not move a muscle. He said in a low voice: “Is it a bargain for $200? I’ll consider that it is if you don’t shake your head.” The statue remained still, and when the Lily came out afterward, she was so taken with the originality of the scheme that she paid the money over at once.
