A Norick ancestor of mine. Pennsylvania Dutch (actually from Indiana) was starved to death here. The confederates were at the time BLOCKADED by sea, they could get no imports by ship. So in retaliation against the Yankees, they refused to feed the POWs. The irony is that before the war, Germans and Irish tended to be cool to Mr. Lincolns War. They tended to vote Democrat, and sympathize with the South. After the war, the Democrats (conservatives) in the North no longer had such an easy time winning. Lincoln may not have been especially popular while he was alive, but in the North his popularity rose somewhat. (After his death)
