A North Chicago man is facing felony charges for the robbery of three gas stations and a convenience store in Kenosha in late 2012 and early 2013. Ronald Spease, 30, is charged with four counts of armed robbery. Each carries the potential for 25 years in prison, if convicted. Spease was charged in April with one count of armed robbery, for an Oct. 24, 2012, incident at Quality Foods, 1824 50th St. This month, the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office filed three more, for robberies at gas stations on Nov. 21, Dec. 14 and Jan. 4. In the Quality Foods robbery, police said a man pointed a handgun at a clerk’s face and demanded money. The clerk complied. On Nov. 21, a clerk at Marathon, 8101 22nd Ave., said a man came in about 9 p.m. and was talking on a cellphone for about 30 seconds before pulling out a gun and demanding money and Newport cigarettes. About 7 p.m. Dec. 14, the Citgo station at 4920 60th St. was robbed of cash and five packs of Newport cigarettes. The clerk said he also gave the robber about $50 from his own wallet. Someone came into Mian’s Petroleum, 5000 60th St., about 8 p.m. Jan. 4 and demanded money and Newport cigarettes. In each case, the robber was given several hundred dollars and the cigarettes. Spease was identified as a suspect after police released a photograph of the man, captured during the Quality Foods robbery. On Feb. 27 the owner of a North Chicago convenience store saw the picture in a Lake County, Ill., newspaper. He recognized the man as a customer who bought Newport cigarettes from him, and contacted police with the license plate number of a car he had seen the man driving. Spease remains in jail, with bond set at $25,000 in both cases. He is due in court Friday for a preliminary hearing on three of the charges against him.
