A North Texas youth football group has decided to take a stand against the prevailing trend of boosting kids’ self-esteem by awarding them trophies just for showing up. The Keller, Texas, Youth Association issued a statement that they’ve decided participation trophies send kids the wrong message. It said, “Trophies are something you should strive for and earn. Life does not give you a participation job or medal, life makes you earn everything you get.” A spokesman added that kids are given too many things these days, and it’s important to teach them that not everyone can be a winner. Some parents applauded the decision, others oppose it. My take is a little different. Personally, I’m glad that I wasn’t given a trophy for things I wasn’t good at. That’s what helped me figure out as a kid what I WAS good at. I learned early on that I was never going to win the trophy as the best home run hitter or football quarterback. I was going to be the kid who was good at announcing the game on the radio. And you know what: that worked out pretty well in the end. Mike Huckabee
